The book is now shipping
Marco Tabini from php|architect has notified me that the Enterprise PHP book is now in print. Those of you who have pre-ordered should receive your copy shortly.
I'm quite happy that the initial feedback on the PDF version has been positive. Here are the first 2 reviews of the book:
Review by Chris Cornutt of phpdeveloper.org
Review by David Bernal of htmlist.com
If you purchased the book, thanks, and remember that any feedback is welcome!
Greetings,
Ivo

Hey Ivo, you asked about additional feedback about some of the weaker chapters in the book on my (otherwise positive) review. My largest concern was that certain chapters and sections seemed unnecessary, and a little bit like filler. The first two chapters largely cover information that the book’s audience is likely to already be aware of. I’d understand that kind of information more in an introductory PHP book, or one aimed at people who were unsure of whether to use PHP in an enterprise environment, but to me, if someone is purchasing this book, they’ve already made that leap and are looking to streamline their process.
Similarly, the Packages section in the Building Blocks chapter simply lists a bunch of projects that readers can use for various common scenarios. This is information that could be discovered by a simple Google search, so it would have been nice to see a little bit more about your personal experiences with these projects, what their advantages and disadvantages are, and so on.
In short, I guess my main feedback would be to narrow down the audience of the book more. Personally, my picture of the developer to whom the book appeals is one who is beyond the stage of merely hacking things together and installing open source projects to mess with them. Instead, this person is one who is looking to more-carefully consider his design and process choices, so that the result is a more satisfying one than those that the developer has encountered from PHP’s past.
I hope that helps, and I also hope that we do see more books with your name on them in the future.
